RAM

The read and write memory of a computer is called Random Access Memory. The user can write information into RAM and read information from it. RAM is a volatile memory. It is two types:
1.      Static RAM
The static RAM consists of internal flip-flops that store the binary information. The stored information remains valid as long as power is applied to the unit. It is faster and hence costlier. This part of RAM is Bipole Semiconductor based and has shorter read and write cycles.
2.      Dynamic RAM
Dynamic RAM based on capacitor and hence it loses its information in a very short time even tough the power supply is on. As the charge on the capacitor leak away, as a result of normal leakage, the capacitor gets turned off after the few milliseconds. So, to retain the cell information for a much longer time, the cells content must be periodically refreshed to restore the capacitor charge to its full value.
